Abstract: In the 19th century, Serbia and Montenegro fought for freedom and comeback to the European historical scene. They had significant support from Russia, which had its geopolitical and geostrategic goals on the Balkan Peninsula, in connection with resolving the so-called „Eastern Question“, namely, issues of the geopolitical heritage of European Turkey. Russian cartographers worked on the preparation of precise topographic maps of the Balkan war stage, on which Russia fought four wars against the Ottoman Empire during the 19th century. This paper discusses the first works of Russian cartographers on the territory of Serbia and Montenegro, immediately after the Russo-Turkish war of 1828‒1829 and hatt-i sharif in 1831, with special reference to the cartographic representation of borders. Their maps represented an improvement from the previous Austrian and other European maps, and today they represent first-class archival material as documents of the first legal state establishment of borders of Serbia and Montenegro. The aim of this paper is to attract the attention of researchers for the study of these geographical maps and the context in which they were created.
Key words: Old maps of Serbia, Old maps of Montenegro, Russian cartographers, military cartography, historical cartography, 19th century, Balkans.
